President's Message

Theresa Halula

As the Morels begin to appear, we’ll let you know as soon as MSSF sponsored forays are scheduled.  Reservations are first come first serve. Keep an eye on the MSSF Calendar, we can’t schedule dates until the morels are coming up-which varies from year over year based on weather and temperature on the ground.   Curt Haney will announce forays as they are scheduled.

Not all morels require fire to trigger fruiting. They come up in their own season, the spring. You might find these in your neighborhood or in pine forests.

We hunt for morels in the spring. Find them in pine forest habitats such as Shasta Trinity Alps Area, The Stanislaus National Forest, and others. Following the many fires of recent years there will be many places to find burn morels across northern California, if rain supplies the moisture needed to fruit. They are not usually found in burns the first spring following a fire but may appear several years after a burn. Recently burned park lands are sometimes closed due to danger of falling trees or other hazards found by forest managers. Check on road and area access status before you go. Morels fruit in undisturbed conifer forest, lightly disturbed forest like in campgrounds and along roads, and in areas with heavy machinery disturbance and woody debris. The earliest fruiting of morels occurs at lower elevations and moves up during the season following rising soil temperature. Be on the lookout for Morchella snyderi, Morchella tridentina, Morchella brunnea, Morchella populiphila, Morchella eximia, Morchella sextelata and Morchella exuberans, Morchella tomentosa. Not sure which Morel you found? Drop an observation into iNaturalist for a confirmation. Don’t forget to cook morels, they will make you sick if eaten raw.  Check in with the forest office during business hours to inquire about allowed use rules for forest products. Happy hunting out there!

All society members are welcome to attend MSSF Council Meetings to see how MSSF Council and Committee Chairs run the operation and begin to learn how you can take part in MSSF leadership roles in the future.
