MSSF Spring Forays Update

Curt Haney

MSSF spring forays will be scheduled and announced by broadcast e-mail to all MSSF members as they become available between May and July. These forays will depend upon how many foray, and assistant foray leaders volunteer to organize or assist in leading them. If you would like to lead or assist in leading a foray anytime during these months, please contact Curt Haney at forays@mssf.org or call me at (415) 640-6233.

Spring camping forays are difficult to schedule since most State and National Forest campgrounds do not open up until late May due to snow levels and cleanup from winter storms.  However, this should not stop you from getting out there and searching on your own.

The Mt Shasta/Mc Cloud area foray scheduled from approximately 23 to 30 May is still in the planning stages and will be announced soon. We are just waiting on snow melt reports and the opening of the Trout Creek Campground.) Anyone interested in assisting me with this foray please contact me.)

The huge Caldor fire from 2021, located in El Dorado National Forest has been fruiting for the last two weeks and morels are plentiful with lots of commercial and non-commercial pickers. You can pick a pound a day in the El Dorado NF without a permit, but acquire one at a El Dorado NF office if you need one. Search on-line and you can find out more info and the location of the burn along with maps on this fire, and many others. Also check out the group (Mushroom Hunters of California) on Facebook for additional information.

Other 2021 fire burn scars to think about investigating are:
  • Lava Fire near Weed CA
  • Beckwourth Complex Fire near Truckee CA
  • River Fire near Yosemite
  • Dixie and Fly Fire in Plumas and Butte County
  • Tamarack Fire near Lake Tahoe
  • Bootleg Fire in Southern Oregon
  • McFarland, Monument, French, Lava, Antelope, Mc Cash, and Walkers fires.
Also consider investigating many of the over 50 fires from 2020 which mostly did not fruit morels last year due to the lack of spring rain. Some of these fires could do well if sufficient spring moisture is received this year. Plus, there may not be much competition since most commercial pickers concentrate on the most recent fires from 2021.

Watch for more spring foray e-mail announcements soon from the MSSF Foray Committee. As long as we continue to receive future spring rain this season the morels should continue to fruit. Cross your fingers and do a rain dance, etc. Looking forward to seeing many MSSF members in the forest soon.

NOTE: All Forays are for members only; no guests of members are allowed to attend forays which are “Members only events”. Convince your friends to join the MSSF. Every MSSF adult membership is a family membership. On your membership profile you can add additional family/household members. That way when you register for a member only event you will be able to register additional family/household members for an event. Some events may have a set number of members who can be registered for that specific event, “two adults with 2 children”, etc. Additional household members are a spouse, partner, child, etc. living at the same physical address as the primary MSSF member. All additional household members are considered full MSSF members.
