Mona Mushroom at Burning Man

As many of you know, there is a fair amount of overlap between the Burning man community and the mycological community. For all you burners out there, we have this for your amusement from our President, Natalie Wren (a 20+ year burner)

If you are going to Burning Man this year, you are invited to the Million Mushroom March to celebrate all things fungi. Responding to last year’s theme of Animalia and this year's theme Curiouser and Curiouser, we decided the time of the mushroom has come! We must demonstrate its vis vitalis to the world.

Anyone who identifies as a mushroom enthusiast, mushroom curious or as a mushroom (or maybe just have mushrooms inside of them) is invited to don their best mushroom outfit and march as a group to honor The Big One. This 30 ft tall metal mushroom sculpture aka Mona Mushroom will be erected by volunteers in the playa and equipped with 10 powerful lasers to fend off intruders from other kingdoms. We will tunnel through a wormhole into the polished mirror interior to find ourselves immersed in a myriad of waves made out of light and ambient music to create a surreal surrounding dreamscape. Legend has it that the mycelium has been under the surface of the playa for thousands of years, waiting for the perfect time to produce this massive, colorful fruiting body. This year, conditions are perfect, and it will rise to the surface as a beacon to connect us all. We will meet at Center camp and march before sunset - the light show starts when the sun goes down. Before the march starts, we are planning to conduct workshops on mycology, the science of psychedelics, and mushroom-inspired arts at Center Camp.
Mona Mushroom Display for Burning Man
We are looking for fellow mycology experts, enthusiasts, educators, marching band members, and other performers to participate by creating and conducting fungally inspired workshops and shenanigans along with marching out to pay our respects to Mona. We also need folks with experience handling power tools to help with various tasks required to erect the mushroom and associated arts support camp. Reach out to janishesse@googlemail.com to participate!
