Health Matters

Valley fever, an infection caused by breathing in fungal spores in dirt or dust, is on the rise across California. More than 6,700 provisional cases have been reported across California through the first seven months of 2025. The rates are highest in the San Joaquin Valley, the disease’s namesake, but cases have been increasing in the northern Central Valley and on the Central Coast.

President's Message

Welcome to the 75th season of the Mycological Society of San Francisco. The MSSF was founded in 1950 to promote the understanding and enjoyment of mushrooms and other fungi. Our mission has since expanded to advocate for the preservation of mycological habitats and to promote and maintain the rights of the general public to collect mushrooms for study and recreational purposes on public lands.

Besides these lofty ideals, we like to have fun finding mushrooms. You can stay in touch with upcoming MSSF events at our website, our Facebook page, and the groups.io members list (follow the groups.io link to find out how to subscribe). For spur of the moment events, we’ll send an email blast to members.

Our foray program is being revived, so keep an eye out for announcements for fall, winter, and spring forays. The Education and Cultivation Program is planning lots of great workshops, events, and local Quick Start Forays. We have an exciting slate of speakers scheduled for our General Meetings, which are held every 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Randall Museum in San Francisco. More info is or will be on the Website Calendar and Meetings page.

In anticipation of an uptick in attendance this year, our meetings will be held in the Randall Museum Theater. It’s a beautiful facility with a large seating capacity, so please consider joining us in person. As always, we host a social hour in the Buckley Room prior to the meeting. There will be lots of goodies to eat, a mushroom ID table, and bona fide ID experts. Hope to see you there!

The two biggest events of the year are the Mendocino Woodlands Camp Foray, and the Fungus Fair. Mendo Camp will be held this November 14th thru 16th. Registration will open either in late September, or early October. Note: It sells out quickly.

The Fungus Fair will be held at El Camino High School in South San Francisco on December 7th, 2025. Volunteers are the backbone of the MSSF and especially needed for this event. We need volunteers to help set up on 12/6 and run the fair on 12/7. Please contact Elizabeth Simonson, our volunteer coordinator, at volunteer@mssf.org if you can help in any way.

Most of all, we wish for a good rainy season, and lots of mushrooms. So far, it’s still very dry in central California, but we know there is fog drip bringing up Chanterelle somewhere along the coast, and there may be a few Princes still popping up here and there.

Happy hunting,
Mike McCurdy

Movie Night with MSSF

We are thrilled to be able to share a screening of the new Australian documentary "FOLLOW THE RAIN – a journey into the weird and exquisite world of fungi"
~ by Planet Fungi ~ [Trailer]

Filmed over several years across some of the wildest landscapes in Australia, Follow the Rain is about fungi and the living, breathing connections that hold ecosystems together.

It takes audiences on a journey through the mysterious world of zombie fungi, the secret trading systems between trees and fungal partners, a decade-long mission to name a new species and even the rain-making power of fungi in Australia's arid heart.

But what makes this film truly remarkable is its quiet reverence for the natural world and its deep respect for the science that underpins it. The documentary captures not just fungi, but the wonder and discovery that drives those who work to understand it.

The evening will be free to members and $10 for non-members. You will need to reserve a spot to attend and an email with an eventbrite link will be sent closer to the date.

We look forward to seeing you there!!

From our Education Chair

Another mushroom season is upon us. I'm really hoping 2025-2026 will be a great mushroom season full of adventure. Come out to our monthly meetings, join the culinary group, sign up to take part at our Mendo-Camp event in November and volunteer for our Fungus Fair in December. Please be sure to check our MSSF calendar and our Facebook and Instagram sites. Also, check our sites for forays, workshops, other type of fungal outings.

Communicating with fellow MSSF members and fungi friends at large will also keep you in touch with current events. No better way to expand your fungi web than attending an event.

I look forward to seeing you out there.
