Volunteer for the Fair

Elizabeth Simonson

Once again, we are excited to announce our annual Fungus Fair. Our 52nd Fungus Fair will be held on Sunday, Dec 8th, at El Camino High School in South San Francisco. Mark your calendars!

We are an all-volunteer club, and the fungus fair can't happen without your help!
We will need volunteers for set up on Saturday, Dec 7th, and on Fair Day, Sunday, Dec 8th. In early October, members will receive an invitation to volunteer. Keep an eye out for the email. Volunteering is fun and rewarding, and it also gives you a free entry into the fair. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Lobster Hunting in Mendocino

Anthony Branda, an enthusiastic MSSF member's first time hunting lobsters. He had an amazing time spending the weekend in Mendocino, boondocking in the back of his minivan.

And also found...

White Chanterelles
(Cantharellus subalbidus)

After the harvest, Anthony went down to the beach to cook up his lobster mushroom score.

President's Message

Sarah Ruhs

Ever since I was little, I loved exploring the outdoors - hiking, fishing, picking blackberries. As an adult, I attended a mushroom talk at my library and discovered the magical world of fungi! If I had only known about it when I was little. (I probably would have perfected a chanterelle stuffed rainbow trout, to go along with my blackberry buckle.)

I am sure that all of you have enamored memories of your first mushroom experiences. MSSF is the place for making those memories. Volunteering is an excellent way to support our educational organization, while meeting new friends and having a blast! Please reach out to our amazing Volunteer Coordinator Elizabeth Simonson at fungusfairVC@mssf.org for information on how you can help make MSSF magical!

I hope you all had a fantastic summer and are ready for the fall rains to come and quench all of the mycelia! I look forward to meeting our members at Mendo Camp in November, and seeing all of the fungifan families at our Fungus Fair in December. Please enjoy this month’s marvelous mycena news and I hope to see you in person at the General Meeting!

Culinary Corner

Dinna Davis

As we approach the end of our Summer and eagerly anticipate Fall, I think back on last year and the mother lode size of some mushrooms that Nature provided...  Specifically, Porcini and Chicken of the Woods from the Pacific North West last year.
