Fungi of the Sky Islands

Damon Tighe

Damon Tighe Damon Tighe, by day, is a biotechnologist who helps high school and community college instructors bring modern biology techniques into classrooms via Bio-Rad Laboratories and moonlights as a naturalist in the Bay Area with an emphasis on community science through DNA Sequencing and iNaturalist.  He has been involved in fungal surveys in Ecuador, Australia, and helped run the Mushrooms of the Sky Islands course that used to operate through the Southwestern Research Station.

Fungi of the Sky Islands

Mushrooms in Arizona?! But isn't it all just desert? The conspiring tall mountains and the monsoonal moisture of Arizona make it one of the most unique places to hunt for a large diversity of fruiting fungi in North America. This visual tour of some of the stunning mushrooms, peppered with the natural history of the area and quirky stories of some of the characters involved in sequencing and uncovering the diversity, will have you wanting to rush out to the Sky Islands next season.
