The Magic of Mushroom Dyes: Making Two Colors with Phaeolus schweinitzii

Wilder Herbertson

Wilder Herbertson Wilder (they/them) is an ancestral skills practitioner and teacher with a focus on mushroom and plant foraging, fiber arts, and ancestrally appropriate diet. They are called to share this earth-connected work for two reasons. Firstly, so that others can join in this reverence and wonder. But mostly, it’s only by recommitting daily to our sacred contract with the earth that we can build a future in which we can live. (I am fed, my thirst is slaked, and all my needs can be met; this can only occur if we steward the earth in right relation.) Through this work, we can build a future in which we can live.

Workshop

The Magic of Mushroom Dyes: Making Two Colors with Phaeolus schweinitzii

Join Wilder in this hands-on workshop, dyeing with mushrooms! We'll be using a rockstar dyer, Phaeolus schweinitzii, or Dyer's Polypore. Participants will dye and take home two different colored silk handkerchiefs, both dyed with P. schweinitzii using different treatments. Come if you want to learn about mordanting (what the heck does that mean anyways??), pH, time, temperature, how to store dye mushrooms, what materials work best for dyeing, and more!

Past Fairs

The Mycological Society of San Francisco has been hosting 1 or 2 Fungus Fairs each year since 1969. Fairs have been held in San Francisco County, Alameda County, San Mateo County, and Marin County. Historical information is available about previous Fungus Fairs:
