President's Message

Sarah Ruhs

I hope that everyone survived the deluge of rain that fell upon our golden state and watered all the mycelia. I am happy to be finally walking through wet grasses and mud, hunting mother nature’s little and BIG gifts. Hopefully you will also be able to go out and enjoy this mushroom weather, even if you don’t strike gold.

Big shout to David Gardella and his wonderful team on creating yet another magnificent Mendo Camp this year! I particularly enjoyed the perfectly grilled mushrooms and bread, alongside the hearty bowl of soup, and a fancy mushroom infused cocktail to finish it off. I saw some very creative mushroom crafts that members made and witnessed the exciting mushroom dye workshop. What we lacked in fungi, we had fun with all the people who attended in the breathtakingly beautiful Mendocino Woodlands.

Did you know that everyone who wrote and compiled this fungtastic newsletter is a volunteer? Yes, you too can become part of the plannings and actions of this amazing mycological society by volunteering! We are always looking for volunteers for all sorts of events, such as the Fungus Fair. We are also actively seeking someone with proficient HTML knowledge to make minor calendar updates to our website. If that you are interested in volunteering with MSSF, please reach out to volunteer@mssf.org

Stay warm and enjoy this lovely season however you choose. Just make sure it involves mushrooms!

Thank You for Mendo Camp 2024

David Gardella

A MSSF Mendo Camp 2024 Thank You
& See You Again in November 2025!

Thanks to the over 140 MSSF members that were a part of this year’s MSSF Mendocino Woodlands Foray. It was another wonderful weekend in the woods with a full schedule of presentations, workshops, demos, food, and overall fungi fun!

That's the way you do it~!~

Culinary Corner

Dinna Davis

For this Culinary Corner, I was hard-pressed to single out a standout mushroom. With the recent back-to-back days of rainfall, we were left with the promise of what would be fruiting shortly after. Some of my forager friends have been lucky to find some Porcini and Chanterelles here and there, but not in abundance...
but the most consistent mushroom popping up on everyone’s radar is the Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus sp.)! Given the recent rains and cooler temperatures, you have the perfect environment for this mushroom.
